Director of Government Relations

Position Purpose: Are you a community connector? Use your relationship building skills to advocate on behalf of students attending Minnesota’s community and technical colleges in the halls of the state capitol. We are building a movement to make Minnesota’s community and technical colleges affordable for every Minnesotan.

LeadMN (formerly the Minnesota State College Student Association) is an association of college students connecting for change in higher education. We represent 180,000 two-year college students that come from every corner of Minnesota to advocate for opening the doors to opportunity for every person in Minnesota. We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to achieve their dreams. At LeadMN, every student has the potential to be a leader that will help address tomorrow’s challenges.

The Director of Government Relations position will be responsible for advancing higher education policy objectives of the association at the state capitol, grow our relationships with business and community leaders, and support LeadMN leadership development activities through training and mentorship. A great candidate must love working with students and thrive in a mentorship role.

Equity and Inclusion Campaign Intern

Position Purpose: The ideal candidate is someone who is a passionate individual who cares about equity, diversity, and inclusion, in higher education. They understand the need for proper representation and are driven to ensure that campuses, policies, and systems, reflect the needs of today’s students. They understand how the lived experiences, narratives, and identities of all of us influence our work and educational experiences and as such they are open to supporting students from diverse backgrounds. Most of all they are a leader dedicated to driving change in higher education and they won’t stop at anything to achieve their goals. 

The Equity and Inclusion Campaign Intern supports LeadMN efforts to improve the educational quality and experiences for students from underrepresented and marginalized backgrounds within the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System. This includes but is not limited to supporting the recruitment and retention of students of color, outreach and education regarding equity, and ensuring that LeadMN is inclusive to all students regardless of race, color, religion, national or ethnic origin, level of ability, gender, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic status, and other aspects of identity.

The Equity and Inclusion intern plays an integral role in leading the Equity Scorecard initiative. As part of our commitment to ending racial inequities in education, LeadMN will develop an equity scorecard to collect and disaggregate student data by racial and ethnic groups. LeadMN will produce assessment and accountability measures for gauging the level of equity and inclusion within Minnesota State two-year public institutions. The proposed outcomes will result in a system wide campus climate survey and creation of specifically tailored strategies and assessment measures to improve the success rates and educational quality of students of color.

This internship is designed for individuals interested in learning more about the field of higher education public policy, with a concentration on mass communication and grassroots outreach. The position provides opportunities for a great deal of practical experience and will galvanize the intern’s understanding of the higher education and policy work in Minnesota.

Get Out the Vote Intern: St. Paul Municipal Election

Position Purpose: Are you passionate about creating lasting change in your community? This position will allow you to use your passion to increase student voter turnout and build up the power of student voices in St. Paul. Help us bring the student voice to the forefront of the political debate in the upcoming municipal election. Together we can prove that students vote and will hold their elected officials accountable.

The Get out the Vote (GOTV) intern will support GOTV efforts at Saint Paul College. They will work to engage volunteers in pledge drives, community outreach, and voter registration initiatives. They will work closely with the Minnesota State College Student Association staff to engage students and community members in the GOTV campaign.

The Minnesota State College Student Association (MSCSA), an organization representing the 180,000 students attending Minnesota’s community and technical colleges, is launching a statewide GOTV effort to empower a generation that is often overlooked in the government. This GOTV effort has the power to energize an extremely diverse coalition from Minneapolis that will be ready to make an impact on the state’s public policy conversation over the next decade.

This internship is designed for individuals that are interested in learning more about how to create positive change in communities. It requires the ability to work independently and the motivation to try new tactics. The position consists of hands-on experience and will provide a valuable leadership opportunity.

Internship: Open Education Resources Intern

Position Purpose: Are you tired of paying $250 for a textbook that you use a chapter or two out of? So are thousands of students at Minnesota Community & Technical Colleges.  This position will allow you to use your skills to research, create materials, and have key conversations to advance the use of Open Educational Resources (OERs) and online textbooks. Open Education Resources are often free to low cost, and have the potential to save students thousands of dollars. In fact, one faculty member at a Minnesota college saved students in his classes (in one semester) over $66,000 by switching to an open resource textbook. Your work in this position can make a huge impact in students’ lives & pocket books.

The Minnesota State College Student Association (MSCSA), an organization representing the 150,000 students attending Minnesota’s community and technical colleges, is launching a statewide effort to expand the use of Open Educational Resources.

This internship is designed for individuals that are interested in learning more about how to implement change from the ground up, conduct effective research, and have effective one on one meetings. It requires the ability to work independently and the motivation to try new tactics. The position consists of hands-on experience and will provide a valuable leadership opportunity.
