Get Out the Vote Intern: St. Paul Municipal Election

Position Purpose: Are you passionate about creating lasting change in your community? This position will allow you to use your passion to increase student voter turnout and build up the power of student voices in St. Paul. Help us bring the student voice to the forefront of the political debate in the upcoming municipal election. Together we can prove that students vote and will hold their elected officials accountable.

The Get out the Vote (GOTV) intern will support GOTV efforts at Saint Paul College. They will work to engage volunteers in pledge drives, community outreach, and voter registration initiatives. They will work closely with the Minnesota State College Student Association staff to engage students and community members in the GOTV campaign.

The Minnesota State College Student Association (MSCSA), an organization representing the 180,000 students attending Minnesota’s community and technical colleges, is launching a statewide GOTV effort to empower a generation that is often overlooked in the government. This GOTV effort has the power to energize an extremely diverse coalition from Minneapolis that will be ready to make an impact on the state’s public policy conversation over the next decade.

This internship is designed for individuals that are interested in learning more about how to create positive change in communities. It requires the ability to work independently and the motivation to try new tactics. The position consists of hands-on experience and will provide a valuable leadership opportunity.

Position Duties:

  • Recruit and manage a team of volunteer leaders from the student body.
  • Execute the GOTV campus plan; which will include but is not limited to- pledge drives, voter registration, voter education, and outreach to student voters through tabling, class raps, club outreach, campus events (like Welcome Week & New Student Orientation), etc.
  • Manage registrations and pledges.
  • Plan, execute, and facilitate events and meetings.
  • Assist with MSCSA social media channels such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and email.
  • Create blog content about GOTV updates, events and other student related political issues.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Highly organized and responsible self-starter with the ability to identify new opportunities, while effectively utilizing existing resources.

  • Effective communicator. Values and fosters open communication; uses and understands the importance of active listening skills and is an effective public speaker with above average writing skills.

  • Experience working in a multi-cultural environment where commitment to diversity based on race, ethnic origin, gender, age, sexual orientation and physical ability is an important institutional value.

  • Currently enrolled student in good standing at a Minnesota State college.

Wages & Schedule: $11/hour, no benefits are offered with this position. Average weekly hours will vary from 10–15 hours. It is offered from May 15 through November 7, 2017.
