Internship: Open Education Resources Intern

Position Purpose: Are you tired of paying $250 for a textbook that you use a chapter or two out of? So are thousands of students at Minnesota Community & Technical Colleges.  This position will allow you to use your skills to research, create materials, and have key conversations to advance the use of Open Educational Resources (OERs) and online textbooks. Open Education Resources are often free to low cost, and have the potential to save students thousands of dollars. In fact, one faculty member at a Minnesota college saved students in his classes (in one semester) over $66,000 by switching to an open resource textbook. Your work in this position can make a huge impact in students’ lives & pocket books.

The Minnesota State College Student Association (MSCSA), an organization representing the 150,000 students attending Minnesota’s community and technical colleges, is launching a statewide effort to expand the use of Open Educational Resources.

This internship is designed for individuals that are interested in learning more about how to implement change from the ground up, conduct effective research, and have effective one on one meetings. It requires the ability to work independently and the motivation to try new tactics. The position consists of hands-on experience and will provide a valuable leadership opportunity.


Position Duties:

  • Research existing Open Education Resources & Online Textbooks that faculty can use, effective OER databases, cost savings data, benefits for creating a specific OER for your class & how to do that, and other interesting avenues that you may discover.

  • Set up & conduct meetings with faculty and department heads to discuss the benefits of using OERs.

  • Help create materials on OERs to give to students to help them do this work at their campuses.

  • Plan, execute, and facilitate events and meetings.

  • Assist with MSCSA social media channels such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and email.

  • Create blog content about OERs. Topics could include: cost savings research, examples of success using OERs, new tools for OERs etc.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Highly organized and responsible self-starter with the ability to identify new opportunities, while effectively utilizing existing resources.

  • Has the ability to break down a complex problem and use problem solving skills to address it.

  • Effective communicator. Values and fosters open communication; uses and understands the importance of active listening skills.

  • Is an effective public speaker with above average writing skills.

  • Experience working in a multi-cultural environment where commitment to diversity based on race, ethnic origin, gender, age, sexual orientation and physical ability is an important institutional value.

  • Currently enrolled student in good standing at a Minnesota State college.

Wages & Schedule: This is an unpaid, 10-15 hour per week internship. It is offered from May 15 through August 31, 2017. The internship has the potential to continue into the fall.
