MSCSA students are among the best student leaders in Minnesota and possibly even the country. Among those leadership skills we possess, comes a great sense of ownership of MSCSA. We want to help MSCSA succeed and enjoy participating in the activities MSCSA has to offer which include leadership workshops, civic engagement, advocacy efforts, and funding scholarships for amazing student leaders struggling to attain their education.

Many of our students say that the last MSCSA conference before they graduate is a time of sadness because the whole time they know they will not be here with us next month. But that last MSCSA conference doesn’t need to be a depressing experience anymore. It will be a transition into a new association–the Minnesota State College Alumni Association (MSCAA). It will, of course, not be exactly like MSCSA however; you’ll be graduated now! Alumni will still have the opportunity to grow in their leadership, vote on important topics, advocate for student rights and topics that influence higher education, and fund deserving student leaders each year so they can receive scholarships and graduate college just as you now have.

Over the past few months, the ad-hoc committee appointed by President Sabin, charged with creating Alumni Association bylaws, did just that. Our committee consisted of President Steve Sabin, current student Kyle Vanderflute, alumni Rachel Hanson, Past President Geoff Dittberner with the help of Justin Klander, Jessica Medearis, and myself.

We now have a document ready to be approved at the first annual meeting of the Alumni Association. President Sabin will accept letters of intent from those interested in sitting on the first board at pres@mscsa.org until May 31, 2013. The board then votes for a Chair and Vice Chair and will convene the first annual Alumni Association meeting this summer. In order to be a member of the Alumni Association you must pay an annual gift of at least $30 to the MSCSA Leadership Scholarship. You cannot hold a MSCSA and MSCAA position simultaneously.

In excitement of our new building and Alumni Association getting into gear, we are hosting “The Great MSCSA Get Together.” The event will take place on June 8, 2013 from 1-4pm. We encourage you to bring your whole family and enjoy a day of fun and games with lunch provided. We also have a room block at the Country Inn and Suites in Inver Grove Heights. If you will be traveling and need to stay, please call 651-456-4000 to book a reservation and mention the MSCSA room block for special pricing. If you stay the night, please join us for a breakfast buffet from 8-10am on June 9, 2013 at the hotel. We anticipate a great mix of Alumni and current students fresh off the June Transitional Conference.

We are so excited to host everyone at the “Get Together” and celebrate our plans for an exciting future here at our new West Saint Paul location. Please contact me with any questions at askorich@mscsa.org or 651-203-6462.
